A human rights organization documents the killing and injury of 1,064 children and women as victims of mines in Yemen.
The Yemeni Network for Rights and Freedoms announced the documentation of 1,064 deaths and injuries among children and women, as a result of mines planted by the Houthi group during the years of war in Yemen.
The network cleared out that it documented in the field (1,219) cases of killing as a result of mine explosion incidents in 13 Yemeni governorates, including (317) children and (108) women. It also documented (1,624) cases of injury, including (403) children and (236) women.
The organization mentioned in a report, issued on Sunday, that 3,607 cases of human damage were caused by Houthi anti-armor and anti-personnel landmines, during the period from January 2018 to February 2024, in 13 Yemeni governorates, which are: Ma’rib, Al-Bayda, Al-Hudaydah, Lahj, Taiz, Ibb, Sanaa, Abyan, Al-Jawf, Al-Dhalea, Amran, Saada, and Hajjah.
According to the report issued by the organization, Taiz Governorate topped the list of affected governorates in terms of the number of deaths (214 dead), followed by Al-Hudaydah Governorate (154 dead), then Ma’rib Governorate (148), and Al-Jawf (102), and the rest of the number was distributed( to) the other governorates.
The report indicated that the number of those who sustained injuries that caused them permanent disabilities reached (764) cases, including (272) cases of limb amputation, and two cases of loss of sight
The Yemeni Network for Rights and Freedoms demanded the United Nations conduct an urgent and transparent investigation into the use of anti-personnel mines in Yemen in massive quantities, and use the powers granted to it under the International Mine Clearance Treaty of 1997, to immediately stop the cultivation and use of mines in Yemen, and to take deterrent legal measures for anyone proven to use them during the last period.
