Taiz Health Office Announces Formation of Urgent Investigation Committee into the Death of Child Safiya at the Yemeni Swedish Hospital

The Public Health and Population Office in Taiz announced on Thursday evening the formation of an urgent technical and medical investigation committee to examine the circumstances surrounding the death of the child “Safiya” at the Yemeni Swedish Hospital.

The move came after widespread circulation of social media posts claiming that the child died outside the intensive care unit after allegedly being denied admission due to the family’s inability to pay medical fees.

In an official statement, the office said it had closely followed the reports circulating about the incident, confirming that directives had been issued by the Director General of the Health Office in the governorate to form an investigation committee starting Friday morning.

The committee will review all procedures taken regarding the child from the moment she arrived at the hospital until her death, and verify the accuracy of the information being circulated.

The statement stressed that the committee would submit its findings immediately upon completing its work, as part of the office’s commitment to transparency and accountability in all matters affecting citizens’ safety and rights.

The Health Office emphasized that “the humanitarian mission of healthcare is a red line, and its value is above any material considerations,” affirming that it would not hesitate to take the strictest legal measures against any individual or institution found responsible for negligence or harm to citizens.

The office also called on all public and private hospitals in the governorate to fully comply with directives prohibiting the refusal of emergency cases or patients requiring intensive care or incubators under any pretext related to inability to pay fees.

It warned that any violation of these directives would result in legal penalties and the referral of those responsible to the prosecution authorities.

In conclusion, the Health Office extended its condolences to the family of the child Safiya, urging media outlets and citizens to rely on official sources for information and avoid spreading unverified reports, while affirming that the case would be followed with seriousness and that the public would be informed of all developments in due course.
