National Workshop in Aden Discusses the State of Child Rights Protection in Yemen and Related Challenges

The Yemeni Coalition for Monitoring Human Rights Violations (Rasd Coalition), in partnership with DT Institute, and in coordination with the Joint Government Technical Committee to Prevent the Recruitment of Children and the Justice for Yemen Coalition, organized a national workshop on child rights protection in Yemen under the SAFE II Program, titled “Child Protection in Yemen: Current Challenges and a Roadmap for Practical Solutions.”

The workshop was held over two days, December 17–18, in the city of Aden, with the participation of more than 60 male and female participants representing government institutions and local and international civil society organizations. Participants included representatives from the Ministries of Human Rights, Social Affairs, Education, Defense, Interior, and Health, in addition to the Public Prosecution, the judiciary, and other law enforcement bodies.

Over the two days, participants discussed the state of child rights in Yemen amid the ongoing armed conflict, with a focus on serious violations against children, legal and institutional challenges related to protection and accountability, and ways to enhance coordination between government institutions and civil society. The discussions also addressed practical mechanisms to overcome legislative stagnation.

The workshop further examined the situation of marginalized and displaced children, the importance of linking legal accountability with psychological and social rehabilitation and reintegration programs, as well as the role of transitional justice in truth-seeking, reparations, and guarantees of non-recurrence.

At the conclusion of the workshop, participants emphasized the importance of developing a national roadmap and practical recommendations to strengthen child rights protection, improve institutional coordination, and support national and international efforts aimed at mitigating the impact of armed conflict on children in Yemen.
