Child Killed by Landmine Explosion in Shabwa

An eight-year-old boy was killed on Sunday following the explosion of a landmine in Shabwa governorate, in yet another tragic incident highlighting the deadly toll of mines on children in conflict-affected areas.
Exclusive sources told Yemen Children’s Platform that the victim, Nasser Ahmed Nasser Lasqaa Badas (8), was herding sheep near a gas pipeline in the Al-Dhelaa area of Mayfa’a district when he triggered a mine concealed with a thin wire. The explosion claimed his life instantly.
Yemen continues to record near-daily civilian casualties caused by landmines, most of which were indiscriminately planted by Houthi forces before retreating from frontlines. These mines remain as “death traps,” killing civilians and preventing residents from resuming normal life.
This latest tragedy underscores the heightened risk faced by children, who are among the most vulnerable—whether while herding livestock or playing in open fields. Humanitarian organizations and relevant authorities are being urged to take urgent action to clear contaminated areas and protect civilians’ lives.
