Four Children Die in Marib and Hundreds Infected as Measles Cases Surge Alarmingly in Yemen

The Public Health and Population Office in Marib Governorate has warned of a worsening measles outbreak among children, amid a growing number of deaths and infections recorded since the beginning of this year.

Dr. Ahmed Al-Abbadi, Director General of the office, stated that the total number of suspected measles cases has reached 666, including four child deaths, reflecting the seriousness of the current health situation—particularly with widespread infections among unvaccinated children.

He noted that approximately 90% of the infected cases had not received the vaccine, which has contributed to the rapid spread of the disease and the increase in its complications, some of which can be fatal—especially when accompanied by conditions such as pneumonia and malnutrition.

Al-Abbadi emphasized that the increasing number of internally displaced persons arriving in Marib is compounding health challenges and placing additional pressure on immunization services, amid high population density and difficulties in reaching all children.

He also pointed out that declining health support and the withdrawal of some humanitarian organizations in recent periods have weakened health services, including immunization and primary healthcare, further contributing to the spread of the disease.

He called on parents to urgently vaccinate their children, stressing that vaccines are available free of charge, safe, and effective, and represent the first line of defense in protecting children from measles and its serious complications.

Al-Abbadi underscored the importance of countering misinformation about vaccines and enhancing community awareness, calling for coordinated efforts by authorities and communities to contain the outbreak and protect children.

He affirmed that field health teams continue their work in surveillance, response, and awareness campaigns to curb the spread of measles and reach all affected areas.
