Traffic Police Arrest Driver Involved in Child Hit-and-Run in Sana’a
The Traffic Police in the Capital Secretariat of Sana’a have succeeded, following swift and intensive field efforts, in apprehending a vehicle and its driver involved in a child hit-and-run incident in the Hadda area, within 24 hours of receiving the report. This came after a video of the incident was circulated on the Yemen Children Platform.
The Traffic Police stated that they received a report indicating that the child Aws Ali Mohammed Saree, aged two and a half years, was struck by a vehicle, resulting in fractures. They immediately initiated the necessary legal and field procedures, including forming follow-up and investigation teams to track the circumstances of the incident and collect information and evidence. These efforts led to identifying and seizing a RAV4 vehicle driven by a 36-year-old man.
The police noted that the driver fled the scene after transporting the injured child and placing him on the sidewalk, without providing any first aid or seeking assistance—an act considered a serious violation of the law, posing a threat to public safety and contradicting religious, moral, and humanitarian values.
The Traffic Police confirmed that both the driver and the vehicle were taken into custody, pending the completion of legal procedures and their referral to the competent authorities to receive the deterrent punishment prescribed by law.
They emphasized that firm handling of such cases falls within their national and humanitarian responsibility to protect lives, stressing that fleeing the scene of an accident will not exempt perpetrators from accountability. The police also called on all drivers to adhere to traffic rules and to assume their legal and moral responsibilities in the event of any accident.
