Al Bayda: Two Children Killed, Third Injured in Landmine Explosion, Raising Child Casualties to Six in Less Than a Month
Two children were killed and a third was injured on Thursday, July 23, after a landmine exploded in the Dhi Makhshab area of Al-Zaher District in Yemen's Al Bayda Governorate, in yet another incident highlighting the ongoing threat landmines pose to children.
Human rights sources told Yemen Daily that Amir Saleh Qarwash (11) and Najeeb Abdullah Al-Absi (12) were killed in the explosion, while Abdulaziz Matloub Qarwash (16) sustained critical injuries and was transferred to hospital for treatment.
The incident marks the third landmine explosion involving children in Al Bayda within less than a month, bringing the total number of child casualties to six, including three fatalities and three injuries, according to monitoring data.
In a similar incident on July 14, Khaled Jaabal Al-Jaafari (16) suffered severe injuries that resulted in the amputation of one of his legs and serious injuries to the other after a landmine exploded. Salem Mohammed Al-Jaafari (17) was also injured by shrapnel and sustained critical wounds to various parts of his body.
Landmines and other explosive remnants of war continue to claim the lives of civilians, particularly children, across several Yemeni governorates, prompting repeated calls to intensify mine clearance efforts and strengthen measures to protect local communities from their deadly impact.
